7 Elite Traits + 1

In the sport psychology literature, there are 7 traits of elite performers ranging from one's training attitude to one's personality. In addition, our +1 is the environment as one cannot succeed without support and being in the right place at the right time. We explore these traits to maximize our impact.

Training attitude

One must have an exceptionally positive attitude to all training (e.g., physical, mental, skill sets). An exceptional attitude is characterized by high discipline, initiative, and the goal of a high-quality performance of all training routines.

Body Status

Appropriate body status as evaluated by body size, somatotype, body fat, and flexibility that corresponds to the demands of the targeted sport activities.

Sports specific abilities

Sport-specific abilities such as strength and/or endurance, explosiveness, fatigue/stress tolerance, specific senses such as “ball feeling” and “sense of water”, among others.

Ability to learn

High learnability and general coordination that facilitate acquisition of new technical and cognitive skills is key to improving in your sport. Performance psychology helps one learn beyond genetics.

High improvement rate

Elite performers improve at a faster rate compared to less elite performers. Learning how to properly set goals, manage one’s time, and focus on what is most important will increase everyone’s improvement rate along with proper sports coaching.

Personality traits

Personality is important because it impacts your performance and practice habits. One must be persistent, determined, and creative along with enjoying the sport for itself not for tangible rewards.

Use of mental skills

Elite athletes use a variety of psychological techniques to remain mentally tough and emotional stability under pressure. Can one learn to be mentally tough and emotionally stable under pressure? Yes, one can with dedicated performance psychology practice.

+1 Environment

Environment such as sports available, facilities, training opportunities, encouragement from others, coaching received, financial support.
